With the proliferation of cooking shows and the increasing popularity of reality programs like “Top Chef”, it’s no surprise that everyone wants to cook like a master chef. No more resorting to boring old tuna casseroles or stews! Don’t get us wrong; those are yummy too, but today’s modern citizen wants fun! Adventure! And that applies to cooking too. The world is your oyster! Explore advanced cooking techniques or cultures you’re not familiar with. Learning something new and putting it into action is a fantastic way to bond with your partner.

If you and your date love to get busy over a hot stove, try a cooking class.

Learn to replicate all those fancy-schmancy meals you enjoy while dining out. Whether you want to explore the exotic spices of Indian food, learn something more haute-cuisine like French food, or satisfy your sweet tooth with cupcakes and chocolate, there’s something for every palate.

After you’ve had a few lessons, take your skills on the road with a picnic.

Head over to a scenic lake or park nearby and pack a basket full of some of the goodies you’ve learned how to make. It doesn’t have to be a fancy five-course meal worthy of the Queen of England; a simple selection of food will do just fine. Avoid things that are too messy as the cleanup may be difficult in a park setting. In other words, don’t bring any crazy soups or anything too liquidy. Also stay away from anything that may spoil easily like fish or shrimp.

Just think, it will be like your own personal version of “Top Chef” without the elimination!

Dating after 40: canny ways to improve your prospects

In a recent Woman's Hour programme on first date etiquette, spaghetti, oysters and lobster were just some of the foods described as deal breakers. Men were suspicious of women who ordered salad ("heavy interaction might take place with the fridge later on") or displayed overt greed ("if she flies at the food, she might fly at other things"). Women disliked men who were rude to waiters, or showed no aptitude for the art of conversation.

Yet the Radio 4 programme made no reference to the thousands of people for whom dates are like needles in haystacks. If you can't remember when someone last asked you out, it isn't the minefield of how to behave in a restaurant that causes anguish, it's securing a date in the first place
